Santa Cruz Sentinel - August 1, 2016

Brown, an assistant professor whose courses have ranged from American politics to urban food policy at her previous University of San Francisco and current University of the Pacific, has lived in Santa Cruz since first attending UC Santa Cruz to study politics in 1990. She said part of her impetus for running is gaining more flexibility in her work schedule.

In the past, the downtown resident worked for the nonprofit Community Action Board and as a sustainable agriculture consultant with Swanton Berry Farms. In the past, she has taken part in the city's Living Wage Advisory Committee, the Citizens' Police Advisory Board and Santa Cruz County Women's Commission. She currently serves on the Agricultural Justice Project Advisory Board and the California Institute for Rural Studies board.

In education, Brown has served as the director of a public affairs program, which focused on teaching students how to engage in "practical politics in a variety of arenas."

"I have a lot of knowledge about how our political institutions work," Brown said. Politically, Brown said her experience has included working behind the scenes on local political and policy campaigns, most notably with former Santa Cruz City Council members' Tim Fitzmaurice and Mardi Wormhoudt.
